The player races other racers and wins them over, eventually drawing the attention of Eddie, the leader of the Eastsiders gang and Melissa, his beautiful girlfriend. She introduces him to T.J, one of her acquaintances, who promises him with numerous upgrades and parts, provided he wins races. The player also encounters several street racing crews, some of them being Samantha's acquaintances who befriend the player after he proves his racing skills to them. She helps the player buy his first car, although she mocks the player's choice of the car by calling it "weak". Samantha is the player's friend in Olympic City and she tours him across the import culture scene and illegal street racing therein. The player races in Olympic City in a modified Acura Integra Type R sporting wide body kits and easily winning over his opponents only to be woken up by Samantha from his sleep. Underground was critically and commercially successful, and was followed by Need for Speed: Underground 2 in 2004. Rather than exotic cars, Underground featured vehicles associated with the import scene. All races take place in a generic city at night called Olympic City, though the city bears some resemblance to New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

It was the first game in the series to offer a career mode featuring a storyline, and a garage mode that allowed players to fully customize their cars with a large variety of brand-name performance and visual upgrades. Underground rebooted the franchise, ignoring the previous Need for Speed games which featured sports cars and exotics. Two different games were produced, one for consoles and Windows, and the other for the Game Boy Advance. It was developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts. The game features car parts delivered by real-existing brands, such as AEM, Audiobahn, Bilstein, Dazz Motorsport, DC Sports, Eibach, Enkei, GReddy Performance Products, HKS, Holley, Injen, Jackson Racing, MOMO, Neuspeed, Nitrous Express, O.Z, PIAA, Skunk2 Racing, Sparco, StreetGlow or Turbonetics.Need for Speed: Underground is a 2003 racing video game and the seventh installment in the Need for Speed series.

Each car can be modified to a large extent – both in terms of the visuals (bumpers, spoilers, etc.) and the performance (nitrous injection kit or modified transmission). The game features twenty licensed cars, belonging to such renowned brands as Toyota, Honda, Subaru or Mitsubishi. Need for Speed: Underground offers two main kinds of extreme illegal competitions: regular races and drag races (the so-called 1/4 mile races), both taking place in urban areas.

The game introduces a set of innovative elements to the series, inspired mainly by films such as The Fast and the Furious. Need for Speed: Underground is the next installment in the bestselling racing series regularly released since 1995.
